Putting Sugar in Perspective

Sugar in moderate amounts can play a useful role in the diet. Registered dietitians and nutritionists recommend that between 45 and 75% of food energy should come from carbohydrates, including starches and sugars.1  

Added sugar can contribute up to 10% of total energy intake as recommended by nutrition professionals.2

Kellogg’s offers a range of cereal choices which provide between 2% and 14% of the guideline daily amount for sugar. Less sweet options, such as Rice Krispies, contain a third of a teaspoon of sugar per bowl. Our cereals provide on average less than two teaspoons of sugar per serving. This is within the recommended daily intake at breakfast time.

The table below shows the sugar content range for different carbohydrate-based foods which could be eaten at breakfast time, including some of our key cereals:
